Small Business

Are you a business owner considering affiliate marketing?

If you are a small business, and are considering an affiliate marketing company to sign up with, then look no further. According to Hubspot, Amazon Associates is one of the top 50 best affiliate marketing programs that earn you the highest commission, and their article describes what affiliate marketing is.

A lot of bloggers are in this program as a way to make extra income. Some end up becoming an Amazon influencer, which is a separate program. I’m not there yet. I recently just signed up for the associates program a few days ago, and I love how easy it is.

***Before I continue I need to add that as an Amazon Associate, any links you see in this article are paid ads. I earn commission from eligible purchases. Prices are accurate at the time they are posted, but are subject to change at any time by the seller. Any Amazon services links can also be changed or discontinued at any time by Amazon.***

Why choose the Amazon Associates program?

There are some good reasons for choosing this affiliate program over all the other affiliate programs out there. Here is a list of those reasons:

  • Amazon is a very well known company. Just about everyone shops on Amazon.
  • Free to sign up for an Amazon Associates account.
  • One of the best programs for beginners in affiliate marketing.
  • Simple to navigate the site.
  • One of the top most profitable companies.
  • One of the highest commission payouts in affiliate marketing.
  • Plenty of training articles and videos.
  • Can share links right from your regular Amazon account/app.
  • Can share links to social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and even in the comment sections on your social media.

How to sign up?

First, you have to have a regular Amazon account. If you don’t already have an account, you will have to make one. Log in to Amazon on your browser, and on the main dashboard, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. There will be a section titled “Make money with us”, click on “become an affiliate”. This will take you to the Amazon Associate program application. You will have to create login details, and you have to have a website link. Free website links are accepted, so you don’t have to have anything fancy.

After you submit your program application, shortly after you should get an email saying thank you for applying, and it will show the steps to getting accepted. Make sure to fill in all your financial info, so you will get paid. Once you are in, make sure you start sharing your links because you have to get 3 sales within 180 days in order to stay in the program. Don’t worry though, if you don’t get accepted, or don’t reach your 3 sales in 180 days, you can always reapply.

Program Tools

There are many tools in your associates account to help get you started. I recommend taking advantage of the creator university, which is filled with instructions on how to use the tools provided to you. There are both how to video’s, and plenty of articles, so you can learn whatever way is easiest for you. Product linking allows you to link to favorite destinations, search pages, and any other page on Amazon.

Under the promotions tab, you can find sections to create offers, and promo codes for customers. Find the Amazon Bounty Program where you can earn a fixed commission on eligible purchases of services, and programs ( ex: Amazon Prime, Amazon Fresh, Subscribe and Save, etc. ).Make sure to check out the inspiration hub too. Especially if you don’t know what products to start promoting. There are categories at the top of the inspiration hub page, where you can get links to products under seasonal, bargain deals, top rated, or hidden gems.

Utilize the tools under the tools tab, like Sitestripe, which is a toolbar that will appear at the top of pages you visit on Amazon, and makes it simple to get a link to a page. The link checker is an excellent tool to check your links before posting them. The link checker will check to make sure the link you post does actually link back to your store I.D., so you will get your money. The product advertising API is to help users search for detailed product info, like title, description, prices, and so on. You do have to have your 3 sales before accessing this one. And OneLink is a way to expand your commissions globally to sell products around the world.

Last are your reports listed under the reports tab. There is a consolidated summary where you can check your reports for your local country, or other countries if you are global. And check for any dates you want a report on. Then there is your earning report, which will show you a graph of dates, and you can choose to see more dates, of commissions, bounties, number of link clicks, and any commissions earned.

Now let’s talk money

It’s hard to say an exact amount of what you get paid, and the commissions list is way too long for me to cover in this article. A simple Google search will tell you that associates earn anywhere from 1% to 20% depending on the category of products you promote. That’s an average of $10-$20 per sale. Let’s talk about some categories, since I can’t cover them all.

Amazon breaks down commissions in a couple separate categories, which are long lists. The standard fixed rates for specific categories show a 20% commission for Amazon games, luxury beauty; luxury beauty stores; Amazon explore will pay 10% commission, digital music; physical music; handmade; digital videos is 5%, physical books; automotive; kitchen is 4.50%, and all other categories will pay 4%.

Under special commission rates for bounties, a subscription for audible premium with annual membership will pay $25 per subscription. Having someone register for an Amazon business account will earn you $15 per sign up. Registration for an audible plus membership will get you $10 per membership. A SNAP EBT enrollment earns you $5.00 per enrollment, and an Amazon baby registry will make you $3.00 per registry.

A trade in event for books; textbooks and consumer electronics earns you 4% commission. Fine art items have a limit of $200 per product regardless of revenue received. And it’s good to note that if Amazon determines that your site is promoting mostly free kindle e-books during the period of one month, you will not be eligible for any standard or special commission income. With that being a downside, I would be careful promoting a lot of book links, unless they are only available as a paperback copy, since you have no idea what option a customer will choose to buy the book in.
